Today I have a need to “work”. It is not in quotations because I do not take it seriously. It is in quotations because I enjoy it so much that it seems weird to call it work. Sewing is my passion and what I love to do. And after the past few days with a diabetic child who has a stomach bug (not a good combination), handling it on my own because The Daddy is out of town, I need something to enjoy. I can’t enjoy a glass of wine because I am “it”, on-call, and on duty. I did, however, enjoy a large serving of Ben and Jerry’s after I finally got Petunia to bed last night. But I need more.

She is stable today. Her blood sugar is higher than it “should” be but I spent most of the day yesterday trying to keep her stubbornly low blood sugar up so I am comfortable letting it ride. Nothing worked to keep her blood sugar in the normal range for a very long time. Then it worked for a while. Then she threw up again and we started all over. It was a nerve-wracking and dangerous situation. We ended up in the ER and home very, very late.

It is weird to call creating work because I do it, among other times, when I’m stressed out. It calms me and it is therapeutic. But it is work because it is my business. It is something that I am actively putting effort into and nurturing on a daily basis. I am learning, creating and producing and, dare I say it, having something for myself. And, today, I need a little something for myself. So, while she is sleeping, I am getting started on the wonderful ideas generated by a simple question on the Snugglebug Designs FB Fan Page “What do you want to see in the shop?”. And it’s helping.

Sometimes over here at Snugglebug Designs it is pretty slow-going. Momma can be severely sleep-deprived from middle of the night blood sugar checks some days or there are a gazillion errands to run or my new-found zeal about getting back into shape (via P90X) takes up most of my time that used to be used for creativity. Since I posted last, I have made a teensy bit of progress on a new, sports-themed banner (a couple of them, actually) and I thought I’d give you a little sneak-peek! I love the contrast of the red stitching on this baseball themed one! It will hang by a red binding and have red letters.

I’m not quite as far on this one. I’ve only got the pennant pieces cut out but give me a couple of uninterrupted hours and I could make some real progress! Of course, I’m not holding my breath for that uninterrupted time. It will be finished like every other project is: one seam at a time, sneaking away while I am in the middle of making dinner while Petunia and The Daddy play outside. This one will have orange binding and letters, I think, although black or white could also work.

Because of the successful sweater refashion, Petunia and I stopped by our local thrift establishment after karate class yesterday, specifically to find “stripey sweaters”. Petunia requested more “sweater clothes” and wanted them to be striped. Of course, when I enter with one thing in mind, of course other things jump right out at me, fighting for my attention much like Petunia does any time I’m on the phone (Mommy’s on the Phone Syndrome). So, as Petunia and I both got sidetracked from the stripey sweaters, we found an adorable straw purse for her and a glittery green, light-up-when-you-walk pair of Tinkerbell wedge-heeled sandals. I barely fought off the urge to go through their extensive section of patterns, only able to because we were short on time. We did also, however, find three fantastic options for “sweater clothes”! Two of them aren’t technically sweaters but they are still great candidates for leggings and skirts for the Little One.

This, mind you, is after she also claimed the purple tutu that I posted pics of the other day. “Uh, well…” I say, trying to find some way to tell her she has enough tutus. Seriously, Mommy? Enough tutus? Is that even possible? Then my mind goes to “No, honey. This one is for a poor little girl who doesn’t have any tutus. Maybe her Mommy or Daddy will want to get this one for her.” Poor little girl without any tutus? Really? Okay, I admit, sometimes my Mommy-Thinking-On-The-Fly doesn’t go so well. I’m sure that many, many little girls grow up just fine without any tutus and just don’t feel they missed a thing. Let’s just say my little girl will not be one of them…

It’s my party and I’ll blog if I want to even if I don’t have pictures to post! I just feel like blogging today. Maybe it’s because I don’t have time to and we all want what we don’t have, right? Last night was just one of Those Nights. My Tot has Type 1 diabetes which means I test her blood sugar and give her insulin shots all day long. And sometimes into the night. At bed time last night her blood sugar was too low so I gave her a snack and knew I should test again in a couple of hours to make sure it came up and stayed up. Because diabetes in a toddler is tricky like that. So I tested at 10:30 and she was too high. We are relatively new to this so I wasn’t really confident treating a high, assuming it would just lower during the night. I set my alarm for 1:30 to test again just to make sure and because, call me crazy, I just didn’t want to wake up to a near-comatose child whose blood sugar was at a critical level in the morning. Still too high at 1:30 but a little lower than before.

THEN at 2:30 I hear an “I FORGOT! I FORGOT!” over the baby monitor (long story as to while I still have a baby monitor in my room). So I go in her room and she says she forgot to go get Mommy. In TotSpeak, that means I wanted to come get Mommy but I didn’t for some reason that I won’t share with you and you have to guess. I guessed that it was because I hadn’t put on the night light last night and she was scared because it was too dark. So I asked her what was wrong and the answer I got was “I’m not sleepy anymore.” Gak! So I laid with her in bed for a few minutes (her toddler bed…kinda funny) and then told her I was going to go back to Mommy’s bed and sleep. She wanted to come with me. Hm. If it were 4 am, maybe. 2:30, not so much. So I told her I would turn her bed time music on and she should try to get more sleep. She bought that and the rest of the night was uneventful, thank God. She has done this once before and I had hoped it wouldn’t happen again, especially in light of how “3″ she has been lately and with the middle of the night blood sugar checks I need to do from time to time. I’m not a fan of losing sleep.

Despite the “3-ness” and middle of the night shenanigans (or maybe because of them…sewing helps me relax), I have been finishing up a few projects for the Littlest Ones. Yesterday I finished a cute pair of baby booties that have a flannel lining and finally got around to taking pics of an adorable elephant-themed baby blanket and bib. And, I started work on another baby blanket/bib set. So, although I don’t have time to post pics right now, I will be back later. If I’m not napping…

My mom liked the quilty-thingy I made for my brother so much in “Masculine Yet Snug-Buggly” that she wants two of her own for her couches. Turns out they DO go really, really well with her decor like I thought they would and she didn’t really wanna give it to my brother but, darn me, I had already told him about it so she couldn’t keep it for herself. So there’s my next project. My next two projects, to be exact. And my brother wants a larger version of the lap quilt I made for him for his bed. And there’s a possible custom order in the works…

Since I’ve done this one once before and I’m making two more of the same, it should go quick and easy (famous last words?) and shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for the larger version. It helps also that they’re pretty laid back customers…no real time frame so I can work on other stuff without feeling guilty if I need to. Gotta love it!

It’s not like I don’t have four other (really!) projects that I want to start and a few clothes patterns I want to sew for my daughter. I do. But there is a unique place for me between projects where lack of motivation meets desire to do absolutely nothing and I sit down with them both to watch HGTV. I think it’s the starting part. Normally I am a fantastic starter. So fantastic, in fact, that there was a time when I started quite a lot and finished quite a little. It became a little joke in my marriage. Luckily, a very little joke. I have made progress and I finish just about everything I start these days, unless I deem it unworthy in the midst of it. But the love, for me, of the project is in the “getting lost”. The middle is fun when you can start to see real progress and your creation is taking shape. When you don’t care that it’s an hour past when you should have been in bed or that it’s waaaay too early to be awake because you want to keep working on it.

But, for now, maybe I’ll get some sleep to fuel up for getting lost in my next project…
