This week my sister coined a phrase that I LOVE. “Guerilla sewing”. I will define it for you here.

Guerilla sewing is a type of sewing that is done mostly by Mommas with young (ish) children. Said children need guidance, attention, meals and care (imagine that) so that Mommy Sewing Time can be limited. In some cases, severely limited. We were talking about how my latest creation had been sewn almost sneakily, one seam at a time, whilst I was “supposed” to be doing other things. Example: cooking dinner while Petunia plays with Daddy or entertains herself. Get part of the dinner started, then tiptoe-ing upstairs to grab whatever I’m working on a whir away on the machine for 30 seconds. Running upstairs to put the laundry away and stealing away to the sewing machine to stitch a seam or two after. Or inserting a short, sneaky, seam-sewing intermission into just about anything that I am doing.

The gist of guerilla sewing is that you are sneaking away or taking a break from something that you are supposed to be doing and instead “fighting” to get your projects done by sewing in very short bursts resulting in significant progress before you know it! And sometimes that is the ONLY way sewing progress is made around here…there are no hours in a row for sewing in my world right now. But preschool starts this week! Even Petunia knows what I will be doing with that time. I did not tell her but she assumed when asked by her teachers this week what Mommy will be doing while she’s in preschool. “Mommy’s going to play with her sewing machine while I’m at preschool.” Yes, Dear Child. Yes, I am…

Today I have a need to “work”. It is not in quotations because I do not take it seriously. It is in quotations because I enjoy it so much that it seems weird to call it work. Sewing is my passion and what I love to do. And after the past few days with a diabetic child who has a stomach bug (not a good combination), handling it on my own because The Daddy is out of town, I need something to enjoy. I can’t enjoy a glass of wine because I am “it”, on-call, and on duty. I did, however, enjoy a large serving of Ben and Jerry’s after I finally got Petunia to bed last night. But I need more.

She is stable today. Her blood sugar is higher than it “should” be but I spent most of the day yesterday trying to keep her stubbornly low blood sugar up so I am comfortable letting it ride. Nothing worked to keep her blood sugar in the normal range for a very long time. Then it worked for a while. Then she threw up again and we started all over. It was a nerve-wracking and dangerous situation. We ended up in the ER and home very, very late.

It is weird to call creating work because I do it, among other times, when I’m stressed out. It calms me and it is therapeutic. But it is work because it is my business. It is something that I am actively putting effort into and nurturing on a daily basis. I am learning, creating and producing and, dare I say it, having something for myself. And, today, I need a little something for myself. So, while she is sleeping, I am getting started on the wonderful ideas generated by a simple question on the Snugglebug Designs FB Fan Page “What do you want to see in the shop?”. And it’s helping.

Before I had my child, I had little time for creativity. I know that sounds weird to say that I had less time before I had a child but I allowed myself to be driven in so many different areas that I didn’t take the time to be creative. Driven at work. Driven to stay in shape. Driven to be better at other not-really-that-creative hobbies. Once I had my Precious Petunia, I felt I had to slow down in many ways. The things I did had to be able to be done with her, or at least with her there. Sewing was one of the things that I could do with her in the same room. So, sidewalk chalk drawing took the place of surfing. And sewing took the place of reading and drinking a glass of wine after dinner. But what I realized the other day is that creativity has taken over my life. I have found that whether we’re stringing beads or building sand castles, I have the overwhelming need to create. While I am not an artist (stick figures at best, people), I am creative (or “crafty” as The Daddy says). And I need creativity in my life. We “embellish” our simple sand castles with whatever we can find on the beach and draw our “happy places” in chalk. We make bead and marble “displays” and build “houses” for her toy horses with blocks. I even created a “Casa De la Tires” from an old Amazon box when she was big into the movie Cars. I see pattern and color and want to manipulate it in just about every activity we do. The need to be creative is there and I have to indulge it. It doesn’t even have to result in a product or something to show for the creativity. It just needs to be allowed to be expressed. A creative Momma is a Happy Momma. And what I’ve realized is that because I am a mother I have allowed myself to be more of who I really am and less of what the world expects me to be. I have found strengths and desires that I never knew I had because I was on a different path. I like this path better.

Okay, so Katherine over at sevidesigns.com is always posting tutorials on her site and, silly me, I go and read the blogs that she references. This ends up with me having a much too long list of things that I want to sew, craft or otherwise fiddle with in my “spare time”. (When is that “spare time” anyway???). Well, I didn’t need her help this time. I was thinking about a tee shirt refashion I wanted to do that was inspired by tearosehome and it came to me! I have an ill-fitting sweater that I have meant to get rid of for about a year. For some reason, it’s still in my closet. I don’t wear it. I’m not sure what I expected, that it would get up and march itself into the donation bin? Anywhoo, I thought it would make the cutest sweater-skirt for Petunia. Then I got to thinking (always dangerous): maybe there’s a tutorial out there for this. Oh yeah, Baby! There were several, which I will share with you in a minute. On TOP of that, I happened upon a tutorial for making leggings out of the sleeves of the sweater, which I had thought about anyway but now I see that it is definitely do-able. Seeing the different types of sweaters used in the tutorials inspired me but, as my own closet is pretty bare bones these days, I will either have to raid The Daddy’s side (probably not a good idea) or head to my local thrift establishment (always a good idea!) to see what they’ve got for me. Ooooh, this is gonna be fun!

Here is whipup.net’s take on the sweater-skirt

I love, love, LOVE the ruffley-ness on the bottom!

Crafting a Green World has this take on the sweater-skirt.

Again with the wavy ruffles…love them! And the vibrant colors in her picture gives me all kinds of fun ideas…

The tutorial for the kiddo leggings by way of adult sweater is here .

Well, I’ve done it again…I’m up past my bed time contemplating, writing about, and doing crafty stuff. Going to go get some sleep so as to have the energy to keep up with Petunia as we troll the thrift store for sweaters tomorrow! Happy crafting!:)

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US readers! Our little family is going to enjoy a couple of electronically disconnected days to celebrate the holiday and I’ll be back on the grid late Friday. I have to say I’m really looking forward to spending some down time with my little family. I hope that you have an opportunity to do the same.

Before I go, a little “What I’m Thankful For” list (you didn’t think you’d be able to read a Thanksgiving post without one, did you?):
My miraculous daughter
My marriage
That we have “enough” and that I can adjust my expectations of what is enough not based on what others have but based on what I need.

My extended family–my sisters and brother, Mom and Dad. They are my foundation.

The ability to adapt and choose to be happy. My hobbies and my family help me tremendously with that but I know people who are miserable and who don’t know how to not be. I am grateful that I can always find a way to be happy.

Pretty basic stuff, I know and kind of off the top of my head (I’m being told it’s time to disconnect and get on with it! LOL) but there you have it. I am very grateful this year. Life is good.

It never fails. I get super-focused for a deadline, meet the deadline and feel really, really good about it. And then I crash. Does this happen to anyone else? After the Holiday Open House last week, which I will blog about as soon as I get back on my feet, I just hit The Wall. Motivation escapes me and snack foods call my name during times that used to be used to create. It doesn’t help that I’m still feeling the effects of severe sleep deprivation, both from meeting the deadline and caring for my diabetic daughter in the middle of the night (blood sugar checks, hypoglycemia treatment…oh what fun!). It’s not that I don’t WANT to create. It’s that I feel drained and unable to focus. I want to think that’s normal. That taking a break from the creativity-productivity treadmill is appropriate, normal and even helpful after a very productive period. And, if I look at history: college exams, deadlines for other jobs, and the infancy period in motherhood, I see that this is normal. But it still doesn’t keep me from feeling at loose ends and a teeny bit unhappy.

Although I could barely see straight the two weeks before the Open House, I really enjoyed being that focused and getting so much done. And, not only was it good for business/creative productivity, it leaked over into domestic productivity as well. Nobody went without clean underwear, the “floor food” under Petunia’s booster seat was cleared on a regular basis and the house was generally in a good state. Is it that I feel a kind of masochistic joy in pushing myself that hard? Or my flaming perfectionism manifesting itself? Not sure. But what I do know is that I can’t keep it up for long so, for now, I’ll be enjoying some snack foods and contemplating my next move.

Okay, I know that I have not been sewing, blogging, tweeting, or facebooking lately. I love summer but, Good Lord the days are long with The Daddy commuting to his summer job a county away and being gone 13 hours a day. The Tot and I are constant companions, and I DO mean constant. She does not stay with anyone but me. I know that there are many, many women who have much less alone time than I by virtue of having more children and husbands whose regular schedules are like my husband’s summer schedule all the time. That being said, let me now say that I feel very fortunate that in 12 days my world will return to normal when The Daddy goes back to his teaching job and gets home at 4:30 every day. It will be good to not be so utterly exhausted at the end of the day.

Add to the above that in 13 days my baby will start preschool and I have hope that I might feel human again soon! Last year’s summer schedule was much the same as this one with The Daddy gone just as much but somehow this year it is much harder. Maybe it’s that she’s 3 now and has behaviors that are more challenging. Maybe it’s that diabetes is now a constant part of our lives, messing with any plans that we might make and adding work to things that could be so fun. Maybe it’s the 3 year itch that I always seem to get at any phase of my life. I suspect that it’s a little bit of all of these. But in just a short two weeks, I will have more time to sort it all out because The Daddy who is a wonderful Daddy who loves to spend time with his daughter and give his wife a break after work will be returning to his regularly scheduled programming. And my sweet baby will become a preschooler.

Can I get a “Hallelujah”?

A while back at our Mommy and Me class, two of the Mommies with 2-3 year olds had second babies. I decided that it would be fun to give them each a blanket set of the appropriate gender from my inventory so I wrapped them up and brought them to class the next week. When I gave the gifts, one of the other Moms at the class said “Oh, I love homemade gifts!” Huh. I guess I never thought of them as “homemade”, although I suppose they are.

I know that she didn’t mean “homemade” in the way of preschool macaroni jewelry and art projects that your kids bring home but it just kinda hit me that way. And, apparently it stuck with me that way, too because it’s been a couple of months and I’m writing a blog post about it. She is a lovely woman that rarely, if ever, has a bad thing to say about anyone so I know that she was not disparaging my work. And I really like this woman. She is a good mother and a good person. But, the truth is, I wouldn’t have chosen the word “homemade”. Maybe she just had a moment like I know I do (too often) where your brain just doesn’t “grab” the word that you meant or wanted to use. Or maybe I’ve spent too much time in/on/around sites for people who hand make things for sale. I’m not bitter or anything, it just got me to thinking about the difference between homemade and handmade or whether there is a difference between them. What do you think? In your mind, is there a difference? Please comment and let me know!
